STATEMENT IN RESPONSE TO SUPREME COURT RULING: Historic Supreme Court Ruling Upholds Parental Rights in Education

Washington, DC (March 5, 2026) – The National School Boards Coalition (NSBC) expresses profound gratitude to SCOTUS for its monumental ruling that protects students and safeguards parental rights. The Supreme Court determined that schools cannot withhold critical information from parents regarding their children’s gender transitions, a decision that reinforces the First and Fourteenth Amendments.

Dr. Ron Resnick, Chairman of the California School Board Coalition and Trustee of the Simi Valley School Board, stated, “This ruling reinstates the decision of Judge Roger Benitez and reaffirms due process, parental rights, and the protection of religious freedoms. It sends a clear message that the government lacks the authority to exclude parents from significant decisions affecting their children.” He is also urging California trustees to acknowledge that “Parents are the cornerstone of a child’s development and well-being, and any discussions regarding a child’s health and identity MUST include them.”

Laura Zorc, Chairman of the National School Boards Coalition, remarked, “Despite the commendable intentions of elected school board officials to safeguard students and uphold parental rights, they have faced challenges due to board majorities and state laws that restrict their capabilities. However, this ruling now empowers them to serve as local enforcers of the law.” Emphasizing the implications for school board officials, she stated, “This landmark decision calls for an immediate reevaluation of school board policies nationwide, particularly those allowing the concealment of information.”

The NSBC encourages school boards to update their policies, student/parent handbooks, protocols, and staff training to promote transparency and reinforce parental authority in educational matters.

Key Implications of the Ruling For School Board Officials:

Transparency in Student Welfare: Schools must inform parents of any changes regarding their children’s gender identity and transitions.

Policy Reform Required: The ruling necessitates the removal of any language in school board policies and handbooks that permits withholding information from parents, restoring their rightful role in guiding their children’s education.

Protocols and Employee Training: In conjunction with school board policy, the board must ensure that the superintendent establishes new protocols and provides employee training in response to the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Empowering Parents: This decision reinforces the fundamental right of parents to engage in their children’s educational journeys, ensuring they have the ability to make informed choices regarding their well-being.
